Croatian Tourist Board presented at the Ferien 2012 – International Tourism Fair in Vienna

Ferien 2012, fair for holidays, travel and leisure, is one of the largest and most visited tourism fairs in Austria. The fair took place in Vienna from 12th to 15th Janury, and Croatia presented its tourist offer among the 750 exhibitors from 70 countries.

Croatian National Tourist Board with nine co-exhibitors was traditionally presented at the fair in the environment of the Mediterranean tourist destination, in the newly designed exhibition area that stretches on about 150 square meters.

New Head of Business Identifies ‘Quiet Revolution of Retailing’

The University of Ulster has appointed Dr Karise Hutchinson, who is leading research into the survival and growth of small businesses in Northern Ireland, as Head of Business, Retail and Financial Services.

Aged 35, she is the youngest woman to be appointed Head of Department within the Ulster Business School (UBS) at the Coleraine campus.

Dr Hutchinson graduated with first class honours in Retail and Distribution Management from the University of Ulster in 2000 and became a lecturer in the Department in 2004 and obtained a PhD in international retailing in 2006.  She is the first female to take up such a senior role in the Department from which she graduated.

Physical activity and school performance: A closer look

Physical education may be disappearing from some schools, but a study finds that kids who engage in sports or physical activity may do better academically.

Researchers analyzed 14 studies (most from the US) looking at the relationship between exercise and school performance. Of those, 10 were based on observation, four used interventions. The number of participants, aged 6 to 18, ranged from 53 to about 12,000.

The study was released Monday in the journal Archives of Pediatrics amp; Adolescent Medicine.

Economy keeps expectations in check at Accor

PARIS (Reuters) – Accor (ACCP.PA), Europes largest hotel group, said on Tuesday it was cautiously optimistic for 2012 amid an uncertain economic climate, as demand remained robust in its main European markets, emerging economies and the United States.

The worlds fourth-largest hotel group said the situation in debt-ladden southern Europe had continued to deteriorate in the fourth quarter and was not expected to improve this year.

Accor retained its goal for a higher profit in 2011, though underlying sales growth slowed in the final quarter.

Nichola Sharpe leaves online retailer Lastminute.com

Nichola Sharpe has moved on from the online hotel, travel and leisure brand owned by Travelocity group. She has declined to reveal details of her next role.

A statement from Lastminute.com confirmed that she has left for a new career challenge, adding that Travelocity group would be restructuring its marketing and comms teams following her departure.

In the meantime, her role will be overseen by Kathy Maxwell, head of brand and PR for the UK, added the statement.

UK shoppers spent more online in 2011

The amount UK shoppers spend online rose in 2011, according to figures out this week.

According to the latest IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index, British online shoppers spent £68bn in 2011, 16% more than the year before. But analysis by Kelkoo and the Centre for Retail Research found UK online sales were up by 14% to £50bn.

The IMRG study predicts that growth in internet retailing sales will slow to 13% in 2012, and it expects some £77bn to be spent online during the course of the year.

The Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) US retail regular grade gasoline average has now gained for four consecutive weeks through Jan. 9 to a $3.382 gallon two-month high, climbing 15.3 cents since Dec. 19. Of that total advance, 8.3cts of the gain took place during the week-ended Jan. 9, with retail prices goosed higher on growing tensions between OPEC member Iran and the US, and expected economic improvement in the US Refinery shutdowns in Europe and in the Philadelphia-area also underpinned gasoline gains.
